Running burns about 50% more calories per km than walking (roughly 1.0 vs 0.65 kcal per kg per km). But walking wins on joint stress and long-term adherence. For a 70 kg adult covering 5 km: walking ≈ 245 kcal in 60 min; running ≈ 370 kcal in 30 min.
Walking vs Cycling
Per hour: moderate cycling (16 km/h) burns ~420 kcal vs walking's ~245 kcal (70 kg). But cycling doesn't build bone density, and cycle-steps don't count on your tracker. Walking wins for daily step targets; cycling wins for pure calorie throughput per minute.
Walking vs Swimming
Swimming laps burn roughly 2× the calories per hour of moderate walking, is fully joint-free, and works the upper body. Walking wins on bone density, step counts, and near-zero learning curve. Both are excellent — for very different reasons.
Rucking vs Walking

Treadmill vs Outdoor Walking
At identical speeds, outdoor walking burns 3–5% more calories than treadmill walking because of wind resistance and micro-terrain adjustments. Setting a treadmill to 1% incline closes most of the gap. Both count as valid step-goal activity.
Morning vs Evening Walk
Morning walks (especially fasted) may nudge fat-oxidation up 10–15%. Evening walks improve sleep quality and post-meal blood-sugar response. Total calorie burn is identical for the same distance and pace — the difference is metabolic timing.
Incline vs Flat Walking
Walking on 5% incline burns roughly 30–40% more calories than flat at the same speed; 10% incline nearly doubles the flat burn. Incline also loads glutes, hamstrings and calves more than flat walking — a huge underrated benefit.
Brisk vs Moderate
Brisk walking (6.5 km/h / 4 mph) burns about 40% more calories per minute than moderate walking (5 km/h / 3.1 mph) and delivers most of the WHO 150-min moderate-activity target inside a normal step count.
